Special Series: “Suniye Mukhyamantri Ji”…Part-1
Kasauli/Solan, May 13
“It’s very painful to see your mother suffering due to acute shortage of water. We all are helpless to consume contaminated from a hand pump and fearing serious threat of damage of liver, heart, and pancreas. She spends four hours every day to fetch water for us” said a 16-year-old Akshay Kumar of Kasauli. But he is not alone worrying about his mother, shortage of water is a serious issue for people living in rural and urban areas of Kasauli and Solan districts of Himachal Pradesh. Women are in much poor and miserable conditions in various parts of these two districts due to acute shortage of water.
India’s first Prime Minister once said “You can tell the condition of a Nation by looking at the status of its Women.” A visit to different areas revealed that there was nothing change for women even after 75 years of Independence in here. Unfortunately neither BJP nor Congress has given due attention to the problems of villagers specially for females here.
A scenario was much worse for poor villagers here. Despite the fact that water of many hand pumps were declared unfit for consumption, the poor villagers are still consuming contaminated water of hand pump in the absence of any other regular source of potable drinking water in many places. While affluent villagers are paying Rs 2700 per tanker to get water from private water suppliers and managing their life.
“I am spending four to five hours every day to get water from the hand pump for my family. We have no other source of water as we are not getting water supply from Irrigation and Public Health Department. I am a 60-year-old woman and getting water from a hand pump is not an easy task, but I have no option” said Kamla Devi of Kasauli.
A scenario was miserable at Mandodhar area of Kasauli. Women complain about the neglect of their area in the absence of any proper policy of the state and central government. They complain that no of the government so far has given due attention to the problems of area specially drinking water facility.
The situation was similar worse in Solan district where people are complaining where people are also banking on the natural source of water, water tanker from private supplier due to acute shortage of water. “We get water supply after three days that too for half an hour. We depend upon the water supply of tanker from private suppliers” says Rahul Kashyap of Kandaghat.
“The shortage of water not only affecting locals but commuters also. Many Dhaba owners are not having enough water supplies to serve the customers” complained Bhoop Singh Thakur.
“The state government has to think seriously about water conservation schemes. The state government can appeal affluent people of each village to construct water tank in their village for poor people” said Deepak Kumar who is running a restaurant in Kasauli.
